Being Fit
Should you have to be athletic/fit to be a physical education major? I think that being a physical education major mean, being fit or atleast able to adapt to different sports. I dont think people who are not fit or athletic would be good physical education majors because you need to be able to do the stuff you teach. When you teach students how to play a specific sport and you can not even do that sport, then how should you be aloud to teach it? I also dont think you should try and get children physical active if you yourself is not physically active. You need to practice what you preach.

I feel just because your not a physical specimen for the human race, doesn't mean you can't educate kids on daily activities to promote life long health and fitness. In teaching them this is will benefit them by showing kids how to maintain and improve your over all personal health. An educator that is not and athlete or physically fit actually may benefit those in a positive manor. for the simple fact of demonstrating that anyone can but forth and effort and be active and its better to do so earlier in life than later.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Mike. Hypocrites are not taken very well with most people. This is no different with physical education. Given an average student population in the public schools, students look for excuses to do work and misbehave. Thus, a PE teacher who is not active just gives kids a target and excuse. With that being said, I also believe it is equally important to be educated. A teacher who is ignorant to thing like the English language serves no positive purpose.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely need to be fit, not so much athletic, to be a physical educator. Not everyone is going to be good at every sport. Thats the point where you have your students demonstrate if you can't. Yo do however need to be fit. If you are teaching students something how are you going to make them believe it. Actually showing them will be much more beneficial. When they see actual, real results of a healthy lifestyle, it may make them want to do that. Back to the hypocrites thing. How is someone going to listen to what your telling them if you don't even do it yourself. As you said, practice what you preach!
